68 Question-Answer Memory

Time needed 10-15 min

Why? Students create their own tests in an enjoyable way. Students learn to work in groups.

When? This method can be used after one topic is finished.

How? Its a partner work. The teacher has to give to the students some paper, let the students cut this paper in small peaces. Now the students have to find some questions about a taught topic and the matched answers. Let them write down this at the small paper. Every paper couple also need to get a matched symbol to the theme the question is about. When the students are finished, force the whole class to play the memory game, put the questions and the answers backwards at the table in two groups, one questions one answers and let them play the memory game.

Any risks? Some times students need longer to create the memory. The teacher should push them to make it in that short time, to encourage them to find answers in a short time.

67 Draw a picture method

Time needed: 10-15 min

Why? Students will learn to work very quick in a group together at one topic. They need to abstract the taught topic and compress it in a small painting.

When? This method can be used in the introduction stage to find out what knowledge is existing already as well after one topic is finished.

How? The teacher is dividing the students in groups between 3 and 5 students. The teacher is giving the groups a theme, or the students also can choose the theme by self and then very spontaneous they have to draw the picture. Later the class has to describe what they can see inside the other groups paintings and the group itself is explaining after that what is actually in their mind.

Any risks? Students mostly request more time for that, but the short time should encourage them to be spontaneous, this is very important to find out deep safe absorbed knowledge.

66 Post card method 2

Time needed: 10-20 min

Why? Students learn how to compress absorbed knowledge to make is understandable in a short version for others.

When? This method can be used after a taught topic is finished.

How? Divide students in groups of two students, let them choose one for them interesting theme out of the taught topic. Give them the task to create a postcard for friends based on that chosen theme. Let them send it to their friends later on, or use the postcard to send in inside the class and the other groups have to explain what they understood about that postcard.

Any risks? This method also will need a lot of time, but those methods are good to let them go deeper inside the topics and create something by self. For the teachers it will be a good evaluation instrument what students really absorbed from the taught topic.

65 Questionnaire

Time needed: 10-15 min

Why? Students work self responsible and independent outside the school.

When? This method can be used any time while the discovering stage of the learning process.

How? The teacher gives the students the task to write down as much questions as they can find when they think about one special topic which they got in their mind when they are outside of school. Let them find very practical connections to the taught topic. Later these questions can be discussed in the lesson with everyone.

Any risks? Students might just create these questions at their desk at home. Let them write down the question and on the other hand directly also the situation when this question came to their mind.

64 Cheat sheet method

Time needed: 10-15 min

Why? Every student is using once a while this method to recall knowledge. Let them do officially.

When? This method can be used after one topic is finished.

How? Let the students choose one theme out of the taught topic, or give everyone one question connected to the taught topic. Then tell them to create a cheat sheet with key words about that topic. The letter cannot be bigger than the students hand. After everyone is finish, let them stand up and speak about the question without using the sheet.

Any risks? Students will do that, with your help or without, it is a good method to compress the taught topic.

63 Collage method

Why? Students for in self responsible groups and recall taught knowledge in an artistic way. Its also based in interdisciplinary learning.

When? The method can be used after one topic is finished to make a kind of complex recall of the knowledge. This method is special useful if there is enough time after a topic duration or also for replacement classes to repeat absorbed knowledge in a meaningful and self responsible way. Its also a nice decoration for the class room.

How? The teachers is preparing a lot of material, newspapers, magazines, color pens, color paper any additional materials which are useful for a collage. The teacher is dividing the students in groups. Students decide the theme of the collage based on the taught topic and use the material to create a meaningful display. This can be also based on a reward system based on the best display.

Any risks? There is a lot of time needed for those collage. Mostly one lesson of 45 minutes is not enough time to make a complete collage. The best moment is to use the time before holidays when students are not so powerful anymore and the motivation is already looking forward to have holiday. With this method the teacher can motivate them in a different and easy way. For replacement lessons its a good way to use the time in a meaningful way.

When? This method can be used after one topic is finished, while the discovering process with topic change and also at the introduction stage.

How? The teacher is writing in big letter one term at the white board. The students take the letters to find one word which is connected and describe this topic deeper. Later these words can be taken again to get again deeper in the topic.

Any risks? Some students might come up with the same words. Let them together decide the word with the strongest meaning connected to the topic.

60 Telephone-Joker

Time needed: 1-3 min

Why? Everyone is using the new technological inventions, mobile phones are common, everyone knows how to use it.

When? Any time while introducing a new topic or in the reviewing stage.

How? Give the students a task to solve and if they have a question they have just one telephone joker, let then send to some friends one sms or a short call to ask that question. They will have some fun while doing it and they need to think clearly which friend can know the correct answer. They need to think about the topic and who is connected to that topic from their friends.

Any risk? Yes of course some students will use the chance that they have their hand phone for a moment in their hands to send a private sms, just let them do it, its also a moment for the students to relax their mind and its just 1 minute, then everyone has to switch of the phones again. Or use your own hand phone if you just give the whole class just one joker.

61 Post card method 1

Time needed: 3-5 min

Why? Students need to think interdisciplinary

When? This method can be used, after one topic is finished to review or general in reviewing stages.

How? The students sit together in a circle, the teacher put some postcards in the middle at the floor. Students stand up and walk slowly around the postcards, don’t speak, and choose one postcard. Take the postcard, sit down and students by students very short explain some parts out of the taught topic.

Any risks? Students have to take connection lines between the postcard motive and the taught topic. It would be nice if every Student is choosing an own card, but if some students choose the same card let them explain the topic together.

59 A letter to myself

Why? Every one is sharing secrets with them self easier then in open discussions.

When? Any time after a taught topic or a finish of a duration of a taught subject.

How? Give the students time to write to them self, or to a good friend a letter. In that letter they have to explain, what they learned the last weeks about that special topic and they also reflecting how they can use that in their daily life. The teacher can collect it and give it back after another session is over, so that everyone can read again their letters, after some weeks.

If the teacher is using the “letter to a friend” method the students can also give advises and the friends can answer in the beginning of the following lesson. Then collect the letters and go on like above described, collect them and give it back after a some weeks or days.

Any risks? The students mostly have a lot of fun while writing to them self or a friend, of course some students will write private things as well, which is ok, to focus them, the teacher should tell them that he will collect the letters. it is sometimes helpful to let them write private things, these “private” topics can be transporter for the subject as well, even just in small parts.

58 Bee-hive method

Time needed: 5 min

Why? Students will be supported to discuss and invent own ideas together with friends, they will also be able to discover questions which they never would ask in front of the class.

When? After a duration of taught topics this method can be perfect to discover undiscovered questions and to repeat absorbed knowledge.

How? After a taught topic the students will get the possibility to talk and discuss with the neighbour or friends in small groups about the taught topic from the last lesson or duration. It is possible to give them the aim to write down several questions about the topic in that small group, which will be discussed later in front of the class.

Any risks? Teachers have to deal after asking questions, often with an embarrassing silence. Students don’t like to stand alone in front of the class with unclear problems, but in smaller groups with friends, they don’t have that problem, they will openly ask if they recognise that there is something not clear also for their own friends. To ask a question together is often easier then alone.

If teachers work more often with that method, the private conversations which are not welcome in class will be less, because they will get the chance to talk in that circles privately which is forcing also the braveness to ask suddenly questions to the topic. It is also a very relaxing situation, because the teachers allows students to talk. The pressure of looking for chances for these private conversations inside class will leave. Situations of concentration will be not disturbed from private forbidden secret conversations anymore.

57 Interdisciplinary method / subject connective actions

Time needed: 5 – 10 min

Why? Interdisciplinary method is one of the main important methods to open students mind and teach them to think out of their frames, its the best method to reduce “island knowledge”.

When? All the time when teachers find some connections in between two different topics.

How? The teachers arranging their lessons based on the connective topic together and prepare a parallel lessons to give students a few for one topic from two or more different sides. The lessons will be hold separately but arranged together.

Any risks? Two different teachers will have two different concepts if they plan those connective lessons alone and the few about one topic will be unclear, that’s why it is important, when the lesson will not be taught together, that the teachers arranging their both lessons in advance together.

56 Association lines

Time needed: 5 – 10 min

Why? Association line are the best possibility to recall knowledge in the deeper thinking of the subconscious.

When? Any time when the teacher recognise that the students need to have a break time while passive thinking.

How? Let the students start the association line with one word connected to the topic and then they should repeat the first word and say one more word which is connected to the first one and so on. After one student can’t continue the correct order of the words, this student has to connect all the words under the taught topic and recall knowledge includes these words.

Any risks? The students mostly will have a lot of fun while that game, it trains the brain to remember associative content and give them possibilities to associate sub content to remember knowledge.
